Our Friend Kristy

Monday night Jason, Jack and I had just finished dinner, and turned on Monday night football when my cell phone rang. It was Kristy. I answered and she was frantically trying to tell me something, but I could barely understand what she was saying. An entire gamut of horrible scenarios were running through my mind as I tried to figure out what was going on. She was finally able to tell me that she was at Wal-mart down in Espanola, she was picking out her yogurt, when a man who worked there had fallen over, maybe had a heart attack, and she had performed CPR on him for at least 15 minutes waiting for the EMT's to arrive. She has been carrying a CPR mask in her purse since she took a First Aid class in college, but has never had to use it. At that point the EMT's had arrived, but she did not know if the man was going to make it or not, he was not breathing, and they were going to shock him. I told her that I would come down to get her, that I didn't think she should drive, she was too shaken up. After we arrived back in Los Alamos she had a bad night, thoughts of the man's family, the man's condition, and the events that had happened that night ran through her mind making it almost impossible to sleep. The next morning she went to work feeling emotionally and physically exhausted. She told her co-workers what had happened, and they told her to go do what she needed to do. She drove back down to Espanola to the hospital to find out what had happened after she left the night before. They couldn't tell her very much, so she decided to go back to Wal-mart to see if anyone there knew anything. She found out that the man had been airlifted to Albuquerque, and that he was in stable but critical condition. He was alive, and to Kristy that was all that mattered! I am not sure if I have expressed to Kristy how wonderful she is for what she did, but if you know Kristy it is just something she would do...that's Kristy :)
